Iirc, Ctrl+Alt+[Plus/minus] will cycle through the configurations that 
your /etc/X11/XF86Config file knows about and finds to be valid.  There 
could be other problems preventing you from getting all your available 
modes though.  

I have an older thinkpad that's only capable of 800x600 - what model is 
your thinkpad/how old?
