You made a good point in there.

Red Hat and SuSE seem to be hardware dependant.

I have installed and ran Red Hat with no problems on some systems that 
SuSE had trouble with.
The machine I'm on right now is terrible with every version of Red Hat 
I've tried on it but problem free with every version of SuSE I've run on it.

I have an older laptop that does well with either distro.

Did you check for updates?

What do you mean by a more mature feel with Red Hat?

Did you purchase the Person Edition of SuSE 8.2 or the Prfessional Version.

BTW - I check the site for those ISO downloads and there seemed to be a 
lot of "questionable" material there. Is that stuff legit?

              As for  the use of /opt - IMHO it's all a matter of 
personal preference by the distro packagers. I don't care where they put 
stuff as long as it makes some sort of sense.
