BTW, some ftp servers will flat out tell you that this is the problem:

Connecting to ftp-linux.cc.gatech.edu(130.207.108.134)...
tricia.cc.gatech.edu FTP server (Version wu-2.6.2-5external) ready.
Sorry, your domain name cannot be determined from your IP address
(1.2.3.4).  For security reasons, this server will not allow
connections from IP addresses without a reverse lookup record
in the Domain Name Service (DNS).
