 While I suppose anything is possible, I've never seen a DVD drive that
could not use DMA - are you sure of BIOS and jumper settings?

If hdparm is telling you "no" then it's "no" - so if there's no issues with
BIOS or jumpers might be time to consider another drive.  Have you looked at
MFG. specs to see if DMA is supported.

The system is telling you that this is not supported on your hardware.

Why don't you try mplayer for DVD playback? It's generally more 
lightweight than xine, in my experience. http://www.mplayerhq.hu and 
you play the first chapter of DVDs with mplayer -dvd 1.

I'm curious, what does dmesg have to say about your CD drive?
