The system is telling you that this is not supported on your hardware.

Why don't you try mplayer for DVD playback? It's generally more 
lightweight than xine, in my experience. http://www.mplayerhq.hu and 
you play the first chapter of DVDs with mplayer -dvd 1.

I'm curious, what does dmesg have to say about your CD drive?
