Sounds like grub needs some help.

vi /boot/grub/grub.conf

make sure that the entry looks like below:

#boot=/dev/sda
default=0
timeout=10
###########This next line is likely the issue####
splashimage=(hd0,0)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz
#### Make sure it mirrors the same as your working kernel line####
title Red Hat Linux (2.4.18-19.7.x)
        root (hd0,0)
        kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.18-19.7.x ro root=/dev/sda1
        initrd /boot/initrd-2.4.18-19.7.x.img

Hope this helps.

Subject: [wplug] can't boot my red hat 8.0 box to the new kernel

Please be gentle.....I'm still a newbie.

I ran RedHat 8.0's Up2date today....and grabbed all updates which included a
kernel update (2.4.18-26.8.0)......the new kernel was an available option in
Grub after reboot.....but when I try to boot I get the following message:

VFS: Cannot open root device "LABEL=/" or 00:00
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 00:00

I can still boot to the original kernel (2.4.18-14)......I'm totally lost as
to what I need to do here.....some additional pertinant information.....this
box is dual booting between RH8.0 and winXP......

Thanks so much for the help....I hope I have provided enough information....
