ok i'm trying to start nis in the %post portion of kickstart. the reason i
want to do this is because automount gets the nfs info from nis. so when i
try to start ypbind the script returns the following:

/sbin/service ypbind start
Listening for an NIS domain server.
rpcinfo: can't contact portmapper: RPC: Remote system error - Connection timed out

the rcpinfo line repeats a few times until it the service command fails.
when i reboot the computer, nis starts up just fine. this only seems to
happen when executing the post stuff in kickstart. after kickstart failed
one of the virtual terminals seems to be active. before rebooting i
chroot'ed the terminal to /mnt/sysimage and i was able to ssh to the nis
server. i tried to start ypbind manually and checked out the logs on the
nis server, and there was nothing indicating that the client was
connecting. before starting ypbind i started syslog and the following was
found on the clients logs:

Mar 5 10:13:49 localhost ypbind[1562]: Unable to register (YPBINDPROG, YPBINDVERS, udp).

since i could get to the server and nothing on the server indicated that
the client was getting there, i started looking at the client. since redhat
had just been installed there was nothing in /etc/hosts.(allow|deny). i
tried checking if iptables was running. when i ran the following:

 service iptables status

nothing was returned. and when i tried to stop it:

 service iptables stop

some errors were spat out.

also, since i wasn't sure if it was needed, portmap was started before i
started ypbind and it seemed to start up just fine.

so the only thing i can think of is that there is some kernel dependency
that nis needs to start. can anyone think of something i'm forgetting? has
anyone else tried to use nis in their post install scripts?
