[wplug] Updatedb

Please correct me if I am wrong (because I may be).....but Updatedb will run "on its own" occasionally to update it's database.....
 
How is this controlled?   I ask because yesterday afternoon when I was trying to use my laptop, it practically froze up....and when I managed to get to a terminal to see what was chewing up processes.....low and behold it had decided it was time to updatedb.....
