in my opinion, society :). they're the ones who allowed ms to become the
defacto standard. microsoft simply provides the crack, their customers
choose to smoke it. sure some people have smoke it to 'fit in', but it was
poor forward thinking that led us to where we are today.

personally i think oo is buggy, slow, and unstable. i'm not quite sure who
to blame for that. since it's opensource i could take a gander at the
source and try to improve it. since i don't use word processors, spread
sheets, or presentation software, i'm not to inclined to pick up on that.
to answer the original posters question: i think you should try it for
yourself. my expirences:

i've suggested oo to people and have had most of them come back an complain
about it crashing. after it crashes, i've had to delete the .oo directory
in their home directory or it wont start again. configuring printers is a
pain in the ars. why should each user have to configure printers? why can i
not just stick a file in /etc and have oo read it from there? there is just
something un-unix like about that. really it should be able to integrate
with cups or lprng, but that's just my opinion. to be truly offended, look
at the fonts in their admin program:

i said try it yourself, because i've seen many people who have raved about
how good openoffice is. i have simply had different expirences. it could be
that the stuff that came with redhat 9 sucked, or it might be that on
windows oo works like a charm. i once tried to compile it from source, but
it failed.

What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans, and the homeless,
whether the mad destruction is brought under the name of totalitarianism or
the holy name of liberty and democracy?
