A little trick I've used in the past:

env EDITOR=emacs vipw

Use emacs to edit the files.  You can also do:

env EDITOR=perl_script_which_does_something.pl vipw

To have a perl script do something to the password file.  The script is
given a file as an argument, which it should edit.
