I can't say for sure about your particular situation, but two ideas:
1. the ZAxis mapping is usually for a scrollmouse, usually not what's
found on a laptop. Try disabling it (Comment that line out with a #,
sorry if that's obvious).
2. The gpm (console mouse) server has created mouse related problems for
me in the past, you could try shutting it off and see if it makes a
difference.
