One suggestion would be to lower the color depth you're using to 16bpp. 
Another suggestion would be to get hold of mplayer 
(http://www.mplayerhq.hu) and try that. It prints a lot of helpfun 
information in case something goes wrong, which would help you start 
homing in on the problem.

You didn't mention the most important bits: What video card do you have, 
on what kind of machine, with what distribution, any custom software, 
etc.
