[wplug] Best way to upgrade desktop?

I've downloaded updates for KDE and Gnome for my SuSE 7.3 system.

Before I do anything, I was wondering if its better to remove KDE 2.2 and
Gnome 1.4 before installing
KDE 3 and Gnome 2 - or - should I just upgrade with rpm -U

Have you tried this? How did it go?

My system is working great so I'm a little nervous about fixing something
that isn't broke.

In a related question - How do I customize menus in Gnome on RedHat 8.
I tried using Nautilus but nothing was saved (maybe I needed root permission
or a user menu space)?
I searched the net but could not find what I needed.
