You may need to make the device node if it's not present. I don't mess with
kudzu - but have you tried running it to see what it says? I think it does
not descend into the SCSI chain, but it may be worth a look-see.
Reinstalling is far too drastic - this isn't Windows - you just need to get
the device stuff set and you should be OK.
Did you try something as simple as /dev/tape? I have no idea what device
node this particular tape takes, but it's likely that it's not /dev/st0 and
you may get lucky with a sym link
