Hi again John,
I typed in su - (thank you for the reminder about the - )
and then adsl-setup.
plugged in the following
device:ppp0 (already there at this point I think)
name: DSLppp0 (default?)
login name: as given to me by my housemate as he specified to our isp. I
tried both loginname at verizon.net and just loginname. with, of course, the
actual loginname.
interface: eth0
continuous link
DNS: "server" (the guy at verizon tells me I should just 'open up a browser
and everything should work'. I can't find any IP numbers anywhere. No one
told my windblows anything and it connects, so I'm thinking the gentelman on
the phone may be right. ? )
letting users start and stop the link, standalone firewall for now, connect
at boot.
Anyway, after that I followed it's advice and checked the link status (both
right then and after rebooting) with
/sbin/adsl-status /etc/syconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ppp0
linux said
adsl-status: link is down (can't read pppoe PID file
/var/run/pppoe-adsl.pid.pppoe )
I tried to bring up the link with
sbin/ifup/ppp0
and was told
/sbin/adsl-start line 215: 1389 terminated $connect "$@" >/dev/nu 11 2>$1
Does any of this mean that I *have* to install roaring penguin stuff to get
online? If so, I guess I could download from the evil side of my computer,
burn it on a disk, and then start harassing you all about getting linux to
read from the CD:|
while I'm asking stuff, could someone remind me of the keystrokes to go back
and forth between the command line and the gui? I thought it was something
involving F6 to get to the command and F1-5 to get back to various intances
(wrong word I'm sure) of the gui. I've tried all combinations, with only
ctrl-alt-F6 getting me to the command line but nothing seems to get me back.
Next time I can come to an installfest or other meeting, you guys helping me
can all beat me with your mousepads or something.
