The type of filesystem is important.  If it's a Microsoft NTFS partition,
then you'll have limited write support ...

This is a guess because I don't know what KNOPPIX is doing specifically to 
protect hda1, but I suspect they just have it mounted read-only.

mount -oremount,rw /dev/hda1 

should change it from read-only to read-write.
