Use a framebuffer console.  Which one depends on which graphics chip
your laptop uses.  If yours isn't supported, you can probably compile
in vesafb to your kernel as a fallback, and pass "vga=792" on the boot
line to get a 1024x768x16 console.  See Documentation/fb/* in
the kernel source.
