If you either had

A: access to anotehr machine to pput the hard drive in orignaly

B: a CD-rom drive that you could use temporarily

Damn Small Linux will work on a 486 w/ NO HDD or at least did w/ the 486 
dx2 66 w/ 32 mb ram in my room...
