Thanks for the info but I said 'screw it!'  I replaced my old
modules.conf file (pre-alsa), made some edits and got esd running again.

Like I said, alsa was being touted as better and easier which is why I
decided to try it.  Its taking entirely too much time to muddle with it,
it was just easier to fix the problem I knew how to fix from before...
