That's a mistake on my part, I forgot to mention that you need to run
`apt-get update' every so often to fetch package listings.

This is a bit strange.  When are the drivers for the network card being
loaded into the kernel?  Though it shouldn't matter...

Perhaps DHCP is having some trouble.  You can experiment with other
clients, I suppose.  Try installing pump, dhcp-client, dhcpcd.  You can
probably find out what you have already with `dpkg -l | grep -i dhcp'.
