[wplug] Q: Linux Fonts?

Hello there everyone....

I am looking for a "newbie's guide(s) to fonts in linux".  Every HOWTO 
and general google search nets me a 'white paper type' document that is 
a little more expecting of a linux background than I can handle.

I do a lot of graphic work and want to get a hold of some great fonts to 
  use in GIMP but I seem to have a tough time getting started in setting 
up fonts and such.  ((I'm used to the windows TTF fonts where you drop 
them in the 'fonts' folder and you're done))

Can you point me to some basic reference material on linux fonts?
