If Tim (the guy who actually coded the driver) says you should compile, then 
*YES*, you definitively need to worry about that. Follow the instructions as 
close as possible and take no shortcuts. Compiling the driver is the most 
difficult step of this process.

This just means create a copy of your original driver before you replace it, 
and is a very good general practice. Just do a
# cd /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers
# cp savage_drv.o savage_drv.o.backup

and you're done.
