[wplug] Gentoo install help needed

I'm installing gentoo on my laptop and am getting errors when trying to
emerge some pre-install stuff (prozilla and mirrororselect).  It's telling
me that cpp is "failing sanity check".  I've not done much in make.conf
other than set arch to pentium3 and add a few gentoo mirrors.  If you have
pointers on make.conf edits (like for any of the USE stuff) I'd love to hear
them.  System is a Dell P4 laptop.
