You can actually use what I think is a simpler convention-

if you type in your search without the g and press the tab key, one of the 
autocomplete options is "search for ... " where ... is what you typed.  It 
will use your default search engine.  

Sadly Phoenix lacks this, and it's the only reason I'm still using full 
mozilla instead of nimble little phoenix.
