I know that machine can run X, I had a 'worst' machine that I ran X (with blackbox) -- and it pluged along without a problem. I think I would run X, even if it was just so I could have multiple xterms (or aterm, rxvt, etc). I think it is easier and quicker then switching different consoles.
"John" mentioned a smaller X server. I remember noting it somewhere, but now I can't find my note. I know it was something like TinyX or XTiny, SmallX or XSmall -- Something like that.
