[wplug] Evolution: send with eth but not ppp

Hi-

I am using evolution 1.0.8 (yes it's out of date but I don't want to screw
up my email with an update at this point in the semester). The machine is
a Dell Inspiron 5000 laptop, with a Xircom combo card. The distro is
Gentoo 1.4.

Everyhing works fine at school (pitt), when hooked up via ethernet. When I
use a dialin ISP (stargate)from home, I seem to need to authenticate
anything that is sent out, but the server won't recongnize the various
forms of password that evolution can use. I can get my mail, and control
what happens to it on the server, but I cannot send any messages.

Initially the error msg when I would try to send a mail was
"authentication required." OK, so I found in evolution where you tell it
to do that, and set it. Then I got the error msg "server des not support
authentication type plain." So I went and tried to change the type, and
chose the option for evolution to probe the server for acceptable
authentication types. After that, none of the evolution options were
available. Screwed, huh?

1. Why would the behavior be different from home and school?

2. Is there any way to fix this, besides trying upgrading? (or just using
pine on the pitt server from home, as I am doing now?)

Hope you all are having a nice GUM! I have papers to grade...
