up2date invokes rpm.  I'd wager to say that 80% of the times I've 
rebooted were because rpm had hung and I couldn't install anything new.  
If you do the above, you may find that rpm no longer responds.  If so, 
remove the lockfile and rebuild the rpm database like so (as root):

# rm -f /var/lib/rpm/__db*
# rpm -vv --rebuilddb
