Yup! I'm using rp-pppoe alright, but the default setting is appropriate:

UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MULTICAST  MTU:1492  Metric:1
          RX packets:451 errors:498 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0

It's rather well documented in the roaring penguin website why MTU 
should not exceed 1492.
