that is done easily if you run KDM + KDE, have a look in Control Panel 
- -> Login Manager -> Convenience

Do you really want to run an entire window manager as root? What's wrong 
with su?

Don't underestimate network threats just because you're behind a 
firewall.

Generally you need a reserved partition to hibernate. I guess you should 
check with SuSE on their exact implementation.
