Thanks for the terminal program suggestions.  Minicom looks o.k. but lacks
an important feature.  I cannot set the time delay between transmitted
characters. 

On a curious note, I have RH7.3 doing a weird thing.  I set my screen saver
to require a password.  It worked fine for awhile but now it recovers
without asking for the password.  The display setting password box is still
checked and I even tried toggling it.  Before this it was working a little
quirky.  It would not always try to recover on mouse movements  and
sometimes it would ignore the keyboard.  Anyone hear of screensaver problems
in RH7.3?
