Zipslack is a compressed distribution of Slackware,
that you install over an existing DOS or Windows
system.
ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackware/slackware-4.0/zipslack
There are versions of zipslack for each slackware
distro; just look on the tree. Later ones have a split
version of zipslack, to fit on 1.4Mb floppies. Early
ones may run faster.
There are some websites dealing with how to connect a
parallel port zipdrive to a laptop running DOS.
http://pw1.netcom.com/~deepone/zipjaz/dos.html
http://www.palmzip.de/palmzip/zipdriv3.htm
has a demo driver, but it will just work 7 minutes -
it may not be enough to copy the 35Mb file - use the
Zipslack split version then.
I suggest you to download a rescue.gz root disk from
ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackware/slackware-4.0/rootdsks/
(in addition to color.gz from the version that you
want and the boot disk), to _unzip_ the zipslack
file(s). Other decompress programs won't do it - even
if the author claims that DOS pkunzip could uncompress
the split zipslack.
Of course, if you are running Win95 you should not
have any problem uncompressing that file with Winzip
etc.
As zipslack runs on the umsdos file system, it may be
a bit slow. Some very basic info on tuning linux in
limited pcs, http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~ichi/
Let me know how it went.
