The procps package included with RH 8.0 has a patch that hides the extra
threads. I don't have time to research and see if Red Hat wrote it or if
it came some elsehwere.

You could pull it out of the SRPM:
rpm -Uvh ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/8.0/en/os/i386/SRPMS/procps-2.0.7-25.src.rpm

The patch is: /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES/procps-2.0.7-threadbadhack4.patch

rpmbuild --rebuild ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/8.0/en/os/i386/SRPMS/procps-2.0.7-25.src.rpm
Would rebuild the package for that machine. (/usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386)
