[wplug] Newbie Network question.

Unfortunitly it is intergraded on to the HP motherboard and I can't seem to
isolate what chips might be for just that.

The PCI info looks like it has an SMC controller.
Can you get the actual number from the chip itself?

It may just be a matter of loading an SMC compatible module.

Ok, I spent the last week looking off and on trying to figure out how to get
a working driver for the (I am guessing) controller on IRQ 11 below. When I
type "lsmod" at the prompt al see one driver that says "PCNET32" and since
"PCNET LANCE" is listed next to the one in IRQ 10 when I type
"/sbin/lspci -vv", I am guessing that is the driver for the AMD.
Anyone have any suggestion on where I might look to find a working driver
for the HP motherboard network connection. I know the motherboard is old (a
HP dual Pentium 90), but I am still hopeful to get it running under Linux.
Oh, and I did try to uncomment some of the obvious drivers listed, but none
seemed to work. This has become a puzzle I am determined to solve one way
or another. ;)

Thanks.

Thanks. Went to where you told me to look and both are identified I am
guessing, since there is two Ethernet Controller listed there. One is
assigned to IRQ 10 and the other is IRQ 11.

IRQ 10 is listed as Ethernet Controller: AMD 79c970 and has a [PCnet LANCE]
after that.
IRQ 11 is listed as Ethernet Controller: Accton Technology Corp. SMC2-1211TX
(rev 10) Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Co EN-1207D Fast Ethernet Adapter
Status: and so on...

but it seems only one PCNET32 driver is loaded when I type lsmod.

I also took your advice on the startx. I did eventully get half a screen to
come up *grin* (the top half of the desktop appeared at the bottom half of
the screen). Obviously something is still not right, but it was sooo slow.
I do not think I will use that on a regular basis. Took about a min before
the screen came up at all after typing startx. I had almost rebooted the
machine and probably would have if the phone didnt pull me away for that
time.

Thanks again for the input.

You'll need some information about what has been detected and what
hasn't. Most likely the on board card has not been detected, and your
PCI card *has* been detected.

To get an idea about what you have connected to your motherboard, do (as
root)

/sbin/lspci -vv

To find out which card has been activated, the loaded drivers reported
by /sbin/lsmod might give you an idea. Usually they are quite cryptic
in notation, but you can look up the module names with a search engine
(e.g. eepro100 is an Intel EtherExpress 100, 8139too is a quite common
Realtek chip etc)

You can always look under the hood to see the actual cards and their
types, of course. :-)

First of all, are you trying to startx as root or as a regular user?
Second of all, try running the XF86Config tool again and selecting a
different video driver (perhaps generic VGA) and/or a lower resolution
VESA screen mode.

This message usually means that no video card / monitor combination
could be used (permissions problems aside).

These should get you started!

Good luck
