I have not used it extensibly, but gvd (http://libre.act-europe.fr/gvd/)
seems to work pretty well...

Do you have more information?  Like are you running ./configure or make and
it finds the wrong gcc?  You might try:
    $ make CC=/usr/local/bin/gcc

Or something like that...
