My 2 cents;
PERL is cross platform which nets it a big plus and I personally think that
it is getting used a lot more. PERL is from all accounts a great tool that
you will truly appreciate knowing. There would be a learning curve however,
although not much for a 'c' hacker. (I am told there is also a tk module for
perl) http://www.cpan.org/

"Python is readable perl" so your talking power but easier to understand.
http://www.python.org/

TCL/tk can also be used as a plugin to your/his browser, and it is also
cross-platform.

PHP is very cool but I am not sure that php is going to garner as many
points on a resume as perl.

Have you thought about Ruby? ( http://www.ruby-lang.org/en/ )<--object
oriented.

If your interested in using flash you might think about cold fusion, it's
sort of like php but proprietary and it costs you money. (points for your
resume though.)

In short I would use perl if you have the time, it will benefit you more in
the long run.
