The authoritative location for the HOWTOs is http://www.linuxdoc.org/docs.html
However, the Ethernet Howto there (http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Ethernet-HOWTO
.html) says the same thing about being semi-supported.  I wouldn't worry 
though, I have a Realtek 8139 and I haven't had any problem with it.
