I personally prefer Gnome. I haven't tried the newest KDE; what I've seen
looks cool, but I'm too bandwidth-challenged to download it. I like to
use Gnome with the Sawfish window manager - it looks cool, and it's
stable. However, I run a lot of processor-hungry multimedia apps, so
sometimes I ditch the desktop entirely and run a really minimal window
manager like Black Box. I ought to be really into desktop environments,
since I was mostly a Mac user until pretty recently
(when I bought my Athlon and switched over to Linux), but ironically I've
been finding myself using the command line for more and more stuff and
using X for less and less.
