Yes, RH 7 has an unstable gcc, this probably is your problem.

ext2 has changed over the years.  it used to be the block size was
constant at 1024, but now you can have variable block size, and redhat
usually uses 4096 for larger disks.  Since older distros don't know about
this change, they won't be able to mount these partitions.  (I know all
about this, because our backup system was built with the 1024 block size
built in, it had to be rewritten for rh6.2)  take a look at your drives
with dumpe2fs.
