sendmail isnt normally run from inetd. you could kill the daemon, but it
would come back when you reboot.
this is an abstraction on how most unix systems work:
look for where irix stores the init scripts. they will probably be in one
of the following directories:
/etc/init.d
/etc/rc.d/init.d

so look in /etc (and its sub dirs for an inet.d directory). in that you
should see a script file called sendmail. you can stop it by typing
./sendmail stop from within that directory.

each runlevel will have it's own directory where symbolic links are
stored. these sym links point to the init scripts in the inet.d directory.
normally the runlevel directories look something like this:
/etc/rc0.d
/etc/rc1.d
/etc/rc2.d
/etc/rc3.d
/etc/rc4.d
/etc/rc5.d
/etc/rc6.d

sometimes they are found in /etc/rc.d instead of /etc

so if your sgi is booting in to a grpahical login look in /etc/rc5.d (or
possible /etc/rc.d/rc5.d) for a file that looks like this: S##sendmail.

the S tells your box to start it at boot time. the ## will be numbers.
this tells your box what order to start things. this way dependencies
(sp?) are met. (eg you network starts befor your webserver). so rename
that file to K##sendmail. this will prevent it from starting when the
system switches to that runlevel.

saint scans your ports and looks at the versions of the software you have
installed to see if you have any security issues. there are linux rpms
available, but you should be able to get it to work on your sgi.
http://www.wwdsi.com/saint/

i hope that helps. you should go here:
http://support.sgi.com/irix/index.html
i think if you use the signup link under member profile and become a
member you can then goto the email notification under that. this way they
should email you if there are any security advisories for irix.
