I'm sure there are people here that could provide horror stories of files 
(and filesystems) getting corrupted by OS problems, even when the hardware 
is fine.

Multiple partitions is mostly good for making sure that if you lose a 
whole filesystem (i.e one whole partition) you don't lose everything.
