Mandrake 8.0 rather sucks -- was Re: [wplug] unsuccessful KDE 2.1 upgrade on Mandrake 7.2

Yeah, I saw it after I made that post. It came out just after I was at Mandrake's
site on Thursday for my latest problems. I downloaded it from Penn State at around
400 kbytes/sec late Saturday night and spent all Sunday trying to upgrade until I
finally gave up, cleared a couple partitions, and did a regular install. It does
get KDE 2.1.1 to work, but at this point I don't like 8.0 much overall.

For one thing, XFree86 4.0.3 doesn't work well at all with my S3Virge card. This is
ironic, given that one of the main differences between 4.0.1 and 4.0.2 (4.0.3 is
just a bug fix for 4.0.2) is the work XFree did on the S3Virge accelerators.
Another irony is that the 4.0.2 which Mandrake released under Mandrakefreq in March
works decently when upgraded with XFree86's own 4.0.3 patch and tweaked the opposite
of their recommendation. Now I'll have to uninstall XFFree86-4.0.3-mdk and take the
previous route.

The problem with upgrading seems to be that last week I installed a Futuredomain
scsi controller for eventual use with a nice scsi flatbed scanner that I got last
summer for $10 (I still have to get a cable). The install/upgrade process loaded
the drivers for it without problem. Next, I told it there were no other devices
when it asked, it went on to ask some other things. Then, just as it went to check
my packages, it said it couldn't find any hard drives -- totally ignoring the ide
drives it had found as it set up. It was as though it felt that since I had a scsi
controller, I must only be using scsi hard drives. It wouldn't hear of anything
different, no matter what I did.

The printer configuration process doesn't work right, either. It won't accept input
as su or root.

Mandrake 8.0 does use the 2.4.3 kernel, but it's an impediment to me until Win4Lin
3.0 comes out in the next week or so, because in the meantime I need the 2.2.17
Win4Lin patched kernel. At this point I'm going to hold on to my main installation
of 7.2. Maybe the bugs will be worked out by the time of 8.1 or 8.2, though I may
move up before then..
