To my understanding, the method by which a distribution is identified is itself
distribution-dependent.  I remember Slackware using a file called
/etc/slackware-version, and I think that at least one other distro has
something similar.  Fnord, on the other hand, has no such identification
scheme.  I am positive of this because I built Fnord that way...
