If you only need to start in text mode occasionally, you can also
temporarily disable the gui. At the "boot:" prompt, just type the name
given the kernel you want to use (for the options available to you, hit
the TAB key), then follow it by the number three. For example:

boot: linux 3

This will do the same thing as changing the init but only for that one
boot. The advantage of temporarily disabling the gui, is that each time
you want Xwindows you won't have to type "startx" and you can more
easily select a different window manager if you want to try out
different managers.

----------------

Should you be in Xwindows, to get out of Xwindows and use text mode, you
can bring up a terminal, enter "init 3" or "teleinit 3" and it will shut
down Xwindows and bring up text mode.
