If you use the standard 'Edit->Cut' or 'Edit->Copy' from a GUI, you can
have the text be sent to a little X client called 'xclipboard'. It does
what you are talking about. 

Emacs has had multiple clipboard for a long time, you can see its
content in 'Edit->Select and Paste' as a menu. It grows as you copy text
into the clipboard and sometimes grows larger than the screen size in a
very long editing session.
