Message-ID: <20030908153116.80025.qmail@web41511.mail.yahoo.com> I was wondering if we might add a bit of functionality to the web page. A "to do" list. Simply put, wplug board members could place items on the list which require volunteer work. A desired date of completion and some essential details would be needed. Then perhaps, through some sort of message board gui, you could allow said volunteers to... well... volunteer. Maybe even allow them to post comments/questions. That way we can all see what needs to be done and who has taken on the responsibily for completing it. I think the more self serve the list is, the easier it will be to track and, more importantly, to complete these jobs. And unlike relying on IRC or the mailing list archives, the web page is more static. Projects that fall behind will glaringly be more visible. Btw, the last posting to this mailing list was Sat, 14 Jun 2003. Did you all have a nice summer? __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! A "to do" list. that would be cool. Want to work on it at the installpest on saturday? One thing that's been holding me back (aside from the usual time constraints) is the "merging of the list user/passwords and the website user/passwords" thing. I haven't wanted to do too much involving things that would require egistration (like "I'm volunteering to clean up monkeybot's cage") until we got that ironed out. So, do we still want to do that (I havent' done any research. I don't even have mailman installed locally), will folks really be that put out if they have to make a separate login for the website if they want to do something webwise? I'm not opposed to this, I'm just not convinced a technology solution will cure a social problem (apathy/laziness). > One thing that's been holding me back (aside from the usual time > constraints) is the "merging of the list user/passwords and the > website user/passwords" thing. I've kinda hoped that someone in the mailman team would write an SQL plugin if we waited long enough. :) I'll check their mailing lis What we could do, is create the table changes we expect are needed and I'll hook mailman in later. -james From redtoade at yahoo.com Tue Sep 9 20:40:34 2003 From: redtoade at yahoo.com (redtoade) Date: Tue, 9 Sep 2003 17:40:34 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [wplug-web] Happy New School Year! I completely agree. It's one of the first rules applicable to my profession. "If no one will actually use the system, then it's worthless. Don't implement it." However, in order to complete more lug tasks, we need to draw in more volunteers. And I don't see this happening if we only rely on mailing list, IRC and the occasional GUM turn out. I do feel that if we can get the webpage back on it's feet, and make it more interactive, then we, at the very least, will have more of a permanence to assigning tasks. There are no IRC logs, and the mailing list is so damn unfocused when it comes to these things. So, a simple static wish list would 1. List the board's goals, and express in one static spot what the leadership deems most important... lending a sense of direction. 2. Provide the rest of the group with a list of volunteers. This gives other members an idea of who is who, and what qualifications our developers posess. Not to mention the ever important "who's to blame^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H in charge" when something needs to be fixed. 3. Bring focus and continuity to said projects and some coordination of our resources. If left to itself, nothing will ever be done. Plus most of our resources are seasonal and tend to disappear with the summer vacation. A static list, at the very least, should be there when they get back. And it allows us to track progress without actually establishing direct communication with the volunteer. 4. Raise awareness (ick, I hate that phrase) to the needs of the LUG. Obviously, if people visit the site for other needs... like directions to the installfest, they may come across the wish list. etc, etc. You get the point. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
