My counterpoint is...

I've been using a hosted account without root access for 5 years.
I've run quite a few vhosts under one account, provided mail services
to clients, cvs repositories etc.  Do you know how much time I've
spent in those 5 years on those projects on basic systems
administration tasks?  Its not zero, but that's because of phpBB and
mediaWiki.  But its been very smooth sailing.
