Junior Linux Systems Administrator, Mellon College of Science (MCS)-2000570

Description

Summary:


This position is part of a team that provides computing support to the
Mellon College of Science at Carnegie Mellon University. The
responsibilities of this job are:

40% of time: Software installation and hardware maintenance of the
Linux desktops in all the  MCS Departments, including installation of
the standard MCS Linux package, network configuration, printing setup
and maintenance, hardware testing and customization.

35% of time: Backup and security monitoring of MCS servers, clusters,
and Linux desktops, to prevent failure of the backup systems, security
breaches, hardware problems, and other events that would pose the risk
of data loss.

25% of time: Liaison with faculty members, with University services,
and with vendors to resolve warranty issues, repairs, returns, special
orders, equipment relocation, problem reports, and upgrade schedules
for the MCS clusters, servers, and Linux desktops.

Duties may shift with the evolution of technology and with changes in
the needs for computing support in the Mellon College of Science.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent combination of
education and work experience required

At least two years of experience in administrating a Linux system required

An understanding of open source software development and licensing is desirable

Demonstrable abilities of interaction with Linux systems at the
command line should include:

Knowledge of the general organization of the filesystem

Familiarity with various services and their configuration files

Proficiency with shell scripting and with at least two other
mainstream programming languages

Familiarity with network configuration files and tools.

A sound understanding of networking concepts, the client-server model,
html and web services, logfiles and their content, package management
systems used in Linux (rpm and dpk), and authentication systems

The candidate must be well organized, with outstanding attention to
detail and the habit of documenting all work for future reference.
He/she must be able to work under pressure and must have a
client-centered attitude in preparing systems that meet client
requirements. Since the candidate will function in a team, good
communication skills are necessary. The candidate will be exposed to
quickly evolving technology, so the ability to learn is required.

The successful candidate must obtain all background clearances as may
be required by Pennsylvania Act 153.
