Hiring a systems administrator for a multimedia school. Start date would be
early January 2014, possibly a little before. I am hiring a replacement for
myself, as I have been offered a Linux-related job out of country. I'll be
honest: the pay is not great and the job is a sometimes uncomfortable mixture
of Sys Admin plus Help Desk plus Mad Scientist.
But if you are just starting out in the world of systems administration, this
job is for you. There's a LOT of room for creativity, a lot of room to come up
with new ideas for the network and implement them. It will be a great title
for your CV, so grab this job now and use it to your advantage!
The ideal candidate will be a GNU nutcase; you must refuse to use proprietary
software unless placed in a strangle-hold by your users. I have worked a LONG
time promoting free software in this independent multimedia environment, and I
want my replacement to take that up one more notch. You must therefore know
GNU, Linux, Unix, and networking. You must be a self-starter; otherwise you
will find this job boring and laden with bothersome users. If you take this
job as an opportunity to develop new systems for your users and to promote
assemble a better network and system than what you found when you got here,
you will find this an AMAZINGLY fulfilling job. I speak from experience.
Required knowledge:
- Linux server administration: RHEL and to a lesser extent Debian/Ubuntu
- Linux programming: BASH
- SMB server administration
- A solid grasp on networking, VLAN trunks, and so on

- You should know the Four Freedoms by heart

- Programming: Python, PyQt, Java
- IOS (Cisco)
- AFP server administration
- Familiarity with Drupal
