Or one could eat the additional cost to run the existing site
concurrently on CentOS 5, while a new site is built up, tested and
validated, before switching the DNS over to the new CentOS version.

I think I read the argument against CentOS 5 being having to rebuild
newer software for it. And doing such means Red Hat isn't maintaining
it, so there aren't security fixes, etc... hence the suggestion to
move to CentOS 6 or, once it's released, CentOS 7. For those that
don't know, RHEL 7 Release Candidate (RC) is being released this week.

BTW, I'm now curious what is being rebuilt for CentOS 5? Database
software? Software languages? The reason I ask is that Red Hat
Software Collections (SCL) exists that offers alternative versions.
Although the big limitation is that it is largely only available for
RHEL 6, hence CentOS 6. But SCL does at least exist for CentOS 6, as
Red Hat releases the SRPMS so it can be easily rebuilt.

Just a consideration if one is debating whether or not to move to
CentOS 6 or wait for CentOS 7.
