Here's the transcript from the ErieLUG Revival meeting today.

In order of appearance, ErieLUG members first:
phreekbird = John M. Rice ("Mike")
JustBill = Just Bill
blitzo9 = James (sorry, didn't get your last name)
jason^ = (didn't get his whole name, didn't want a transcript)
happylemur = Vance Kochenderfer
eksortso = Dave O
curlynoodle = Dave Kraus

Feb 17 14:01:53 <happylemur>	eksortso: you awake?
Feb 17 14:01:55 <eksortso>	okay, i'm here
Feb 17 14:02:00 <eksortso>	happylemur, hey ya
Feb 17 14:02:52 <happylemur>	Cool. phreekbird: some of the WPLUG
folks (so far, just me and eksortso) were scheduled to drop in now to
see how ErieLUG's getting along.
Feb 17 14:03:25 <phreekbird>	great
Feb 17 14:03:29 <phreekbird>	=D
Feb 17 14:03:42 <eksortso>	this channel's been good 'n busy the past few days
Feb 17 14:04:08 <eksortso>	tho i just tend to lurk
Feb 17 14:04:42 <happylemur>	Unfortunately, other than glancing at the
web site I'm pretty ignorant of ErieLUG happenings.
Feb 17 14:06:32 <JustBill>	Well since phreek isn't going to repond I
guess, He's been doing good with meetings in my opinion
Feb 17 14:06:48 <JustBill>	our own little install fest a while back
had some tech issues
Feb 17 14:06:58 <phreekbird>	well .. anything specific u guys wanna
know? otherwise ill just start my rambling
Feb 17 14:07:01 <blitzo9>	we have really started to get into things
Feb 17 14:07:42 <blitzo9>	from meetings every few months, we are
starting to have them once a month starting in march
Feb 17 14:07:56 <happylemur>	First, I don't know everyone, maybe
introductions? I'm Vance Kochenderfer, currently WPLUG chair.
Feb 17 14:07:58 <phreekbird>	we just setup a set schedual for lug
meetins, first sat of every mo. from 12-4 ... that way those who dont
get or dont read the invites have no excuse (dont mean to sound harsh
there ... just trying to keep it easy and simple)
Feb 17 14:08:47 <phreekbird>	<== Mike ... i guess you could say i try
to run things ... stress on try ... James helps a ton =D
Feb 17 14:09:07 <blitzo9>	I'm James, and yes I have been helping out where I can
Feb 17 14:09:21 <JustBill>	and of course I'm still lurking around myself
Feb 17 14:09:53 <happylemur>	Good to meet you all - I remember
JustBill from an installfest a ways back.
Feb 17 14:10:26 <JustBill>	I'm like a cockroach, I won't die
Feb 17 14:10:38 <eksortso>	I'm Dave O, from WPLUG, former board
member, and i remember you, JustBill, because I kept confusing you
with Chris! :/
Feb 17 14:11:28 <happylemur>	Nice to see that you've got a regular
meeting schedule. So it sounds like you have a reliable meeting place
now?
Feb 17 14:11:57 <phreekbird>	so basiclly, ya, i have just been
focusing on seting up the site recently, james and i think we will
start to advertise more, local collages and such,.. trying to revive
the irc room (so peeps can get up-to-date news weather and sports) and
other than that not much else is happening
Feb 17 14:12:40 <blitzo9>	mike just finished getting our meeting spot
officially for out monthly meetings
Feb 17 14:12:45 <phreekbird>	yes the building i work in has a floor
dedicated to events such as this ... works out well enough, though i
still wish they would hurry with a better internet setup
Feb 17 14:13:12 <JustBill>	that be the tech issues I spoke about with
our install fest
Feb 17 14:13:35 <blitzo9>	true, blocked ports and web filtering
Feb 17 14:14:06 <phreekbird>	yea well thats a big hospital for you ...
moves at their own pace ... at anyrate, yea thats about how it is
Feb 17 14:14:52 <happylemur>	Sounds pretty decent to me - how many
people are you getting at meetings?
Feb 17 14:16:02 <JustBill>	I don't know, wasn't at the last one as I had to work
Feb 17 14:16:17 <JustBill>	but anywhere from 3-6 seems to be what I'm seeing
Feb 17 14:16:22 <JustBill>	when I go
Feb 17 14:16:29 <phreekbird>	thats about it
Feb 17 14:16:49 <phreekbird>	sometimes maybe an occasional 10 (if
that) but usually 3-6 peeps
Feb 17 14:17:25 <eksortso>	that's a good-sized number. i think most of
the active lugs in Ohio tend to have that number.
Feb 17 14:17:44 *	phreekbird dosnt feel so bad now
Feb 17 14:17:49 <phreekbird>	thats good to know
Feb 17 14:18:03 <blitzo9>	hoping to increase that number within the
next couple meetings
Feb 17 14:18:19 <happylemur>	Having stuff announced in advance really
helps with that.
Feb 17 14:18:39 <blitzo9>	yeah, need to do some promoting / advertising
Feb 17 14:19:06 <phreekbird>	yea wich is why i have been workin on the
site, trying to get it rdy for us to start advers
Feb 17 14:19:17 <phreekbird>	ad its pertty much done know i think
Feb 17 14:19:48 <happylemur>	Interesting speakers/topics can make a
big difference, too. It's been a little difficult lately recruiting
speakers.
Feb 17 14:20:33 <eksortso>	for the record, http://erielug.org/
Feb 17 14:20:43 <phreekbird>	yea, well we seem to just wing it when it
comes to topics .. something i was wanting to discuss with the
regulars next meeting
Feb 17 14:22:01 <happylemur>	I think the biggest meeting we've had so
far was a VMware presentation.
Feb 17 14:22:29 <JustBill>	VMware is in right now
Feb 17 14:22:40 <happylemur>	One of their technical sales folks came
(it wasn't too much of a sales pitch).
Feb 17 14:22:57 <eksortso>	JustBill, "is in right now?" you mean, popular?
Feb 17 14:23:11 <JustBill>	yes
Feb 17 14:23:28 <JustBill>	peopel love virtualizatoin anymore
Feb 17 14:23:50 <eksortso>	yeah, it's getting big
Feb 17 14:23:50 <phreekbird>	afk a min guys ... all this coffee is
getting to me =\
Feb 17 14:24:20 <happylemur>	As I recall, we had one on User Mode
Linux that was well-attended - several years ago, though.
Feb 17 14:25:04 <eksortso>	we tend to get big turnouts for anything
really technical
Feb 17 14:25:39 <JustBill>	I don't remember what our big turnout was.
Feb 17 14:25:54 <JustBill>	phreek did the speaking if I recall
Feb 17 14:28:57 <happylemur>	Two years ago
<http://www.wplug.org/pages/demo-day> we did an intro-level event
which got a good turnout.
Feb 17 14:29:01 *	curlynoodle (n=dkraus at 5.wsvw1.xdsl.nauticom.net) has
joined #erielug
Feb 17 14:29:07 <curlynoodle>	Hello
Feb 17 14:29:22 <happylemur>	Hi Dave.
Feb 17 14:29:29 <eksortso>	heya, Dave!
Feb 17 14:29:33 <curlynoodle>	What have I missed.
Feb 17 14:29:48 <phreekbird>	back
Feb 17 14:29:51 <JustBill>	the plans to the Death Star were passed around
Feb 17 14:29:57 <phreekbird>	looks like the wife is headin to the VA medcenter
Feb 17 14:30:03 <eksortso>	umm...
Feb 17 14:30:14 <phreekbird>	everyone in the house is sick, but shes
really freakin sick ...
Feb 17 14:30:22 <JustBill>	so you taking off Mike
Feb 17 14:30:27 <happylemur>	Sorry to hear it.
Feb 17 14:30:29 <eksortso>	curlynoodle, we're in a sense just getting started
Feb 17 14:31:01 <phreekbird>	no im here still
Feb 17 14:31:10 <phreekbird>	just will be in and out, as i am watching th kids
Feb 17 14:31:44 <happylemur>	No problem, appreciate you sticking around.
Feb 17 14:31:45 <JustBill>	Well we were talking about some topic ideas
Feb 17 14:32:12 <eksortso>	FYI, i'm logging this chat. I can email
copies afterwards.
Feb 17 14:33:37 <phreekbird>	(great so everyone can read about me
going afk for the bathroom!)
Feb 17 14:33:38 <phreekbird>	lol
Feb 17 14:33:44 <eksortso>	we were just talking about meetings,
advertising, attendance, topics
Feb 17 14:34:07 <happylemur>	We also talked about ErieLUG's recent
activity. They're having regular monthly meetings now, which attract
3-6 people on average, and have a reliable meeting space.
Feb 17 14:34:35 <phreekbird>	so ya topic ideas, if anyone wants to
email me some plz do... would love to have each month already setup,
and posted with topics, etc.
Feb 17 14:35:01 <JustBill>	well part of topic idea's are the speakers
that go with them
Feb 17 14:35:32 <happylemur>	So would we... sadly we've been behind
schedule lately.
Feb 17 14:35:57 <eksortso>	it is good to have some things planned a
few months in advance. as far as topics go, you can do whatever
strikes you as interesting...
Feb 17 14:36:27 <eksortso>	gimme a moment...
Feb 17 14:37:17 <eksortso>	just throwing these out there...
Feb 17 14:37:30 <eksortso>	the XO (from One Laptop Per Child)...
Feb 17 14:37:34 <eksortso>	MythTV...
Feb 17 14:37:43 <eksortso>	Gentoo...
Feb 17 14:37:56 <phreekbird>	bill did the mythbox presentation .. i like the XO
Feb 17 14:38:01 <eksortso>	Bricolage CMS (i missed that one)...
Feb 17 14:38:16 <JustBill>	btw, mythtv presentation works a whole lot
better with internet access
Feb 17 14:38:25 <phreekbird>	where can i get a copy of the os ... wish
i had the money for the actuall laptop .. but oh well
Feb 17 14:38:27 <phreekbird>	lol
Feb 17 14:38:48 <JustBill>	I think if you go out the the OLPC site you
can get a demo of the os
Feb 17 14:39:12 <curlynoodle>	phreekbird: Regarding your
membership/attendees, what types of users do you have? Hobbists?
Professionals?
Feb 17 14:39:33 <JustBill>	I'm a hobbist mostly
Feb 17 14:39:59 <blitzo9>	I would day in ranges
Feb 17 14:40:10 <blitzo9>	say
Feb 17 14:40:20 <curlynoodle>	Ranges how?
Feb 17 14:40:43 <blitzo9>	well we do have small attendance
Feb 17 14:41:00 <phreekbird>	i would say hobbiest too ... I use it at
work for a few things, so dose James
Feb 17 14:41:27 <blitzo9>	we get the hobbyist's, people who want to
learn more, people who have been using it their whole life
Feb 17 14:41:54
<happylemur>	<http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Category:Installing_Sugar> has
help on installing the XO interface on other systems.
Feb 17 14:42:06 <blitzo9>	and in a small group you might only ahve 1
person from each category
Feb 17 14:42:09 <curlynoodle>	Understood. My thought is that you
should choose meeting topics based on the primary users. Then build
up to attract "Professional" users.
Feb 17 14:43:06 <eksortso>	that might work out well
Feb 17 14:44:00 <curlynoodle>	MythTV, Home Automation, setting up home
server(s) might be good topics to start with, then build upon them
based on response.
Feb 17 14:44:18 <curlynoodle>	What have you guys done lately?
Feb 17 14:44:32 <JustBill>	I'm currently doing a project on the side
for a security box using Zoneminder
Feb 17 14:45:07 <curlynoodle>	Zoneminder, excellent. I have been
experimenting with that one on and off for awhile.
Feb 17 14:45:15 <JustBill>	when I get it up an running correctly, I'd
be more than happy to show that off
Feb 17 14:45:50 <curlynoodle>	Have you scheduled, or plan to have, an
Installfest anytime soon?
Feb 17 14:46:00 <JustBill>	I'm always more than willing to show off mythtv
Feb 17 14:46:18 <phreekbird>	grrr afk
Feb 17 14:46:20 <blitzo9>	we just had one, I believe 2 meetings ago.
Feb 17 14:47:04 <JustBill>	but that was back in October
Feb 17 14:47:13 <happylemur>	We came up to help with that once before
- anything we could do again?
Feb 17 14:47:27 <blitzo9>	we have a basic intro to nix theme coming up
Feb 17 14:47:29 <curlynoodle>	Another good Home User topic may be how
to setup a Linux firewall/router. I know that the $45 COTS router do
the job, but rolling your own is a great learning experience and
excellent presentation.
Feb 17 14:47:41 <JustBill>	I don't know, with a lot of linux distro's
being so easy to install anymore
Feb 17 14:47:49 <blitzo9>	we did the firewall idea a couple meetings ago.
Feb 17 14:48:09 <happylemur>	Yeah, honestly we don't get a lot of
installing happening at installfests.
Feb 17 14:48:09 <JustBill>	I like the firewall thing, always wanted to
see it done
Feb 17 14:48:37 <happylemur>	It mainly turns into troubleshooting.
Feb 17 14:48:39 <phreekbird>	back
Feb 17 14:48:40 <curlynoodle>	What topic/presentation is planned for
the 3/1/08 meeting?
Feb 17 14:48:52 <blitzo9>	the basic intro to nix
Feb 17 14:49:25 <happylemur>	That would be a good one to promote to outsiders.
Feb 17 14:50:09 <JustBill>	Do any of us regulars need a basic intro to
nix, or are we expecting a high turnout
Feb 17 14:50:23 <curlynoodle>	blitzo9: I would recommend making flyers
to distibution at the local colleges and maybe even high schools to
attract attendance to the "Intro to 'nix" presentation.
Feb 17 14:50:53 <blitzo9>	yeah
Feb 17 14:50:59 <happylemur>	Maybe there's an umbrella IT group (like
<http://www.pghtech.org/>) you could get listed with?
Feb 17 14:51:13 <curlynoodle>	I know that the Engineering and CompSci
departments at Behrend once had some Linux users.
Feb 17 14:52:14 *	jason^ (n=weechat at unaffiliated/jason/x-0000002) has
joined #erielug
Feb 17 14:52:16 <JustBill>	Well guys, I got to go a teach a
highschooler to drive. I gave myself an hour for this. Look forward
to the email for this meeting.
Feb 17 14:52:33 <curlynoodle>	See you JustBill
Feb 17 14:52:38 <eksortso>	you got it, Bill. take care
Feb 17 14:52:39 <JustBill>	David O if you can make sure I get a copy
justbill at gmail.com that would be awesome
Feb 17 14:52:39 <phreekbird>	, ttyl bill ... or not
Feb 17 14:52:40 <phreekbird>	well see
Feb 17 14:52:41 <phreekbird>	lol
Feb 17 14:52:42 <blitzo9>	bye bill
Feb 17 14:52:45 <happylemur>	Have fun.
Feb 17 14:52:51 <eksortso>	JustBill, absolutely!
Feb 17 14:53:53 <blitzo9>	I also planned to hand out flyers and small
mom and pop computer shops, to attract the people who heard of linux
but want to learn more
Feb 17 14:54:45 <curlynoodle>	Does Erie have any PC shops anymore?
Feb 17 14:54:46 <phreekbird>	yea im going to have to buckle down this
week and see what i can do about adv.
Feb 17 14:54:56 <phreekbird>	yea eriecomputer
Feb 17 14:55:01 <eksortso>	are there any free alt newsweeklies in Erie
that you could put ads in?
Feb 17 14:55:05 <phreekbird>	only one i know of
Feb 17 14:55:10 <blitzo9>	yeah we have a couple but they are really small
Feb 17 14:55:34 <phreekbird>	free alt newseeklies? dunno
Feb 17 14:55:43 <blitzo9>	yeah im not sure about those
Feb 17 14:55:47 <eksortso>	small can't hurt. i heard about wplug
through a free paper in pgh. that paper's gone, but wplug and me,
we're still here.
Feb 17 14:57:45 <happylemur>	We might be able to persuade some of our
members to re-run talks they've given at WPLUG.
Feb 17 14:58:22 <happylemur>	You might have to promise them beer to
get them to Erie...
Feb 17 14:58:38 <eksortso>	hey, i can help on that front! ;)
Feb 17 14:58:58 <blitzo9>	we could do that,
Feb 17 14:59:30 <blitzo9>	could create an official LUG beer while we are at it
Feb 17 14:59:43 <eksortso>	heh. i wouldn't go that far.
Feb 17 14:59:50 <blitzo9>	lol
Feb 17 15:00:00 <jason^>	what about flyers at universities? i was
temporarily involved with a linux group at behrend when i still lived
in erie
Feb 17 15:00:14 <eksortso>	tho we do have after-lug hangouts, down
pitchers of yuengling and chat :)
Feb 17 15:00:21 <phreekbird>	lol ill call sam adems! see if he has any
kits available
Feb 17 15:00:33 <blitzo9>	lol
Feb 17 15:00:48 <eksortso>	jason^, that may work out pretty well, and
you could cross-promote...
Feb 17 15:01:11 <eksortso>	wplug may be larger than the average lug
because all our local college lugs disappeared
Feb 17 15:01:12 <curlynoodle>	jason^: when did you attend Behrend?
Feb 17 15:01:39 <phreekbird>	well i figured i would get with a loval
network consultant group and another local telcom group, and adv with
them ... then see what my wife and friends can do for me at mercyhurst
... dunno about the other colleges in the area though , I could also
posibly get with iriquies schools
Feb 17 15:02:30 <eksortso>	oh yes, erielug had an installfest a
Mercyhurst a few years back. wplug came up that day.
Feb 17 15:03:46 <eksortso>	phreekbird, any details on the telcom group?
Feb 17 15:04:46 *	curlynoodle (n=dkraus at 5.wsvw1.xdsl.nauticom.net) has
left #erielug
Feb 17 15:04:57 <eksortso>	i ask because we've had talks on Asterisk
in the past that were popular
Feb 17 15:05:52 <phreekbird>	eksortso king comm i work with them alot
Feb 17 15:06:07 <blitzo9>	we actually had asterisk coem up last meeting
Feb 17 15:06:46 <phreekbird>	brb again, checking on kids ... would
love to sit in on one of those but im clueless bout it ... gues i
could play with it abit ... ok bbn5
Feb 17 15:06:49 <eksortso>	ah, how'd those meetings go?
Feb 17 15:07:15 *	eksortso ought to take attendance
Feb 17 15:07:29 <blitzo9>	well someone mentioned asterisks, they
needed a cheap temporary PBX
Feb 17 15:07:47 <blitzo9>	so i explained it, but that was it, it was a
dedicated meeting on it
Feb 17 15:08:05 <blitzo9>	I would like to demo off asterisk
Feb 17 15:08:38 <happylemur>	Like MythTV, it seems to have a "cool
factor" that attracts people.
Feb 17 15:08:43 <jason^>	i was at behrend in 2001
Feb 17 15:09:27 <eksortso>	jason^, tell us about behrend
Feb 17 15:10:22 <eksortso>	what was your experience with the linux group there?
Feb 17 15:12:16 <jason^>	a bunch of us got together and didn't do much at all
Feb 17 15:12:37 <eksortso>	oookay...
Feb 17 15:12:39 <jason^>	it was kinda like a premeeting, and i never went back
Feb 17 15:12:57 <jason^>	they wanted to meet at times i couldn't really be there
Feb 17 15:13:14 <jason^>	the first meeting was just to figure out who
was going to talk about what when
Feb 17 15:13:54 <eksortso>	hmm, i could comment on a couple things, there.
Feb 17 15:14:18 <eksortso>	at wplug, we often have situations where we
can't all meet at the same time.
Feb 17 15:14:36 <eksortso>	some people just prefer to hang out in IRC
or on the mailing list
Feb 17 15:15:10 <eksortso>	we've started having occasional mid-week
meetings to get different folks out to meet together.
Feb 17 15:15:58 <eksortso>	saturdays might not work for everyone.
Feb 17 15:16:36 <eksortso>	so, it may be worth having small
get-togethers on an agreed-upon weeknight. maybe 2-3 people, who
knows?
Feb 17 15:17:28 <eksortso>	as for events...
Feb 17 15:17:36 <blitzo9>	seems like a good idea, im really only
avaibile on saturdays, and with the small attendance I don't know how
many would show
Feb 17 15:17:46 <blitzo9>	we could give it a shot just to try.
Feb 17 15:18:48 <phreekbird>	back
Feb 17 15:19:35 <eksortso>	they don't necessarily need to be formal
gatherings. a lug's a great place to make friends.
Feb 17 15:20:28 <eksortso>	okay, as for events...
Feb 17 15:20:45 <phreekbird>	yea u know how my life is .. im barely
here in irc .. so sat is about the only time i got too ... if we were
a bit bigger i would worry more about meeting different times... as it
is right now it works so far, dont want to break it
Feb 17 15:21:22 <eksortso>	nah, i don't want you messing up your
saturday meetings...
Feb 17 15:21:40 <eksortso>	you could have an extra get-together,
outside of regular times
Feb 17 15:21:48 <blitzo9>	lets say we had an evening get together, is
this something we should have at the regular meeting spot?
Feb 17 15:21:58 <eksortso>	not necessarily
Feb 17 15:22:29 <eksortso>	we've met at restaurants and bars,
libraries, other places...
Feb 17 15:22:42 <eksortso>	we have an annual picnic in August...
Feb 17 15:23:01 <happylemur>	May this year.
Feb 17 15:23:04 <eksortso>	i'm just talking friendly gatherings. they
could be Linux-related, tech related
Feb 17 15:23:16 <eksortso>	happylemur, oh yeah, thank for the reminder :)
Feb 17 15:23:31 <blitzo9>	how many people show up to these gatherings?
percentage wise from normal meetings
Feb 17 15:24:12 <eksortso>	smaller. they picnics have been bigger,
because everybody brings their families and S.O.'s
Feb 17 15:25:01 <eksortso>	but i remember a talk on security that we
had a few years back, and that was very well-attended.
Feb 17 15:25:24 <blitzo9>	yeah, I am worried about setting something
up and only haveing 2 people show up, i am willing to give it a try
Feb 17 15:25:48 <blitzo9>	phreekbird: what do you think?
Feb 17 15:25:54 <eksortso>	at this point, it can't hurt if only two
people show up. like i said, a lug's a good place to make friends,
too.
Feb 17 15:26:54 <eksortso>	gotta ask this: how do you all typically
communicate? via email, irc, meet in person?
Feb 17 15:28:34 <phreekbird>	sound sok to me, email or irc mostly i think
Feb 17 15:28:40 <blitzo9>	depends, we just revived irc, so we have
been using it, we jsut started a forum.
Feb 17 15:28:47 <blitzo9>	yeah it is mostly email
Feb 17 15:30:08 <eksortso>	then if you want to plan topics, then you
should always discuss them on the mailing list...
Feb 17 15:30:15 <eksortso>	a wiki can help, too.
Feb 17 15:30:53 <eksortso>	i'm flailing a bit, here, but i hope you
get my drift.
Feb 17 15:36:26 <happylemur>	Before we lose anyone else, the $64,000
question is, is there help you need that WPLUG can give?
Feb 17 15:37:19 <blitzo9>	we could use $64,000 for various projects...
Feb 17 15:39:22 <eksortso>	oh, i've got to get email addresses from
some people. jason^ and blitzo9 , can you guys /msg me your email
addresses?
Feb 17 15:39:28 <happylemur>	We're about $63,500 short of that...

Feb 17 15:43:18 <phreekbird>	as for your question happylemer, i would

Feb 17 15:44:32 <happylemur>	It's good to see things humming along -
you guys should also get a listing put up at
<http://www.linux.org/groups/usa/pennsylvania.html>.
Feb 17 15:45:05 <happylemur>	Having a regular schedule really seems to help.
Feb 17 15:46:17 <eksortso>	i googled "erie linux", and got Meetup.com
and ErieLUG on the first page. That's a good sign.
Feb 17 15:48:25 <eksortso>	well, is there more to discuss, or is this
meeting over?
Feb 17 15:49:35 <blitzo9>	I have nothing else to add.
Feb 17 15:49:51 <happylemur>	It seems to be winding down. We can
follow up on the mailing list if need be.
Feb 17 15:50:08 <eksortso>	sounds good, then.
